OPTIC²: a model for organizational clarity and alignment
OPTIC² is Write Design Group's diagnostic model for evaluating and strengthening organizational clarity. It maps the six dimensions through which external evaluators — funders, partners, contracting agencies — see and assess your organization. When those dimensions are clear, consistent, and aligned, the right people say yes. When they're not, even strong organizations lose ground they shouldn't.
Why organizations use OPTIC²
Organizations rarely struggle because of one isolated communication problem. More often, identity, evidence, systems, and public-facing materials have drifted apart over time.
OPTIC² provides a practical way to evaluate those connections. It helps organizations identify where clarity and alignment are strong, where gaps are creating confusion or risk, and what deserves attention first.
The six layers
Each layer answers a different question. Together, they help organizations assess internal readiness, external perception, and communications alignment.
-
Can you manage the work? Operations covers the internal systems, workflows, and documentation that make an organization reliable and executable — standard operating procedures, grant or contract lifecycle management, reporting systems, file organization, and capacity signals.
-
Is the story consistent everywhere someone looks? Public Presence covers the external footprint — website, directories, social channels, public profiles, press coverage, and every place an outside audience encounters the organization.
-
Can someone trust you with their investment? Trust covers governance, compliance, and financial integrity — the documents and risk signals that allow funders, partners, customers, and stakeholders to say “yes” with confidence.
-
What is the approved truth about your organization? Identity is the foundation of the model — the organizational canon. Mission, values, program names, approved language, visual standards, and positioning decisions all live here. When Identity is clear and documented, every other layer becomes easier to build and maintain.
-
What do you do, and what demonstrates that it works? Credibility covers program architecture, evidence, and evaluation — the intellectual backbone that shows an organization’s approach is logical, intentional, and supported by real results.
-
Can you tell your story clearly and consistently every time? Communications covers the narrative assets and reusable content built from Identity and Credibility — the writing kit that keeps messaging aligned across proposals, reports, websites, and other public channels.
How the six layers shape clarity and alignment
The six layers are interdependent. Weaknesses in one show up as confusion or inconsistency in another, which is why surface-level fixes rarely hold.
A strong public presence built on an unclear identity drifts. Consistent communications built on weak evidence collapse under scrutiny.
The model works because it looks at the whole system, not just the symptom.
How organizations use OPTIC²
OPTIC² helps organizations understand the whole system before deciding what to address first. Depending on the need, WDG may use the model to guide an assessment, strengthen specific areas, or help maintain alignment over time.
Assess
We review the organization across the six OPTIC² layers to identify strengths, gaps, risks, and priorities.
Build
We help strengthen the foundations, evidence, messages, materials, and systems the assessment reveals.
Maintain
We help organizations preserve alignment as their work, leadership, and communications evolve.
