The OPTIC² model
A model for organizational clarity
OPTIC² is Write Design Group’s diagnostic model for evaluating and strengthening organizational clarity.
It organizes the six dimensions that determine whether an organization’s story is clear, consistent, and credible — internally and externally.
Why OPTIC²
Most organizations that struggle to communicate clearly are not lacking good ideas or talented people. They are missing a shared structure — a way to see the whole system, identify where things have drifted, and know what to fix first.
OPTIC² provides that structure. It was developed through years of working with mission-driven organizations to understand what funders, partners, and clients actually evaluate and what hampers alignment.
It’s the diagnostic engine behind every WDG engagement.
The six layers
OPTIC² evaluates six connected dimensions of organizational readiness. Each layer answers a different question. Together, they create a complete picture.
-
Can you manage the work? Operations covers the internal systems, workflows, and documentation that make an organization reliable and executable — standard operating procedures, grant or contract lifecycle management, reporting systems, file organization, and capacity signals.
-
Is the story consistent everywhere someone looks? Public Presence covers the external footprint — website, directories, social channels, public profiles, press coverage, and every place an outside audience encounters the organization.
-
Can someone trust you with their investment? Trust covers governance, compliance, and financial integrity — the documents and risk signals that allow funders, partners, customers, and stakeholders to say “yes” with confidence.
-
What is the approved truth about your organization? Identity is the foundation of the model — the organizational canon. Mission, values, program names, approved language, visual standards, and positioning decisions all live here. When Identity is clear and documented, every other layer becomes easier to build and maintain.
-
What do you do, and what demonstrates that it works? Credibility covers program architecture, evidence, and evaluation — the intellectual backbone that shows an organization’s approach is logical, intentional, and supported by real results.
-
Can you tell your story clearly and consistently every time? Communications covers the narrative assets and reusable content built from Identity and Credibility — the writing kit that keeps messaging aligned across proposals, reports, websites, and other public channels.
How the layers connect
The six layers are interdependent. Weaknesses in one layer show up as confusion or inconsistency in another, which is why surface-level fixes rarely hold.
Identity is the foundation. When it’s clear and documented, Operations becomes executable, Credibility becomes provable, Trust becomes demonstrable, Communications becomes consistent, and Public Presence becomes something worth maintaining.
That’s why we start with clarity and why clarity must be built on structure, not intention.
OPTIC² in practice
OPTIC² is the model. Funder Ready is one named application of that model, designed specifically to help nonprofits close the gap between how good they are and how fundable they look.
Additional applications are in development for organizations pursuing government contracts and other contexts where credibility, alignment, and readiness matter.
OPTIC² in action
Funder Ready is the first named framework built on the OPTIC² model and designed specifically for nonprofits navigating the funding landscape.
